A few problems that i can come up with using a wiki in a classroom are as follows…

• Apart from having separate pages is there any way to collaborate together at the same time?
• Will it keep students on track? I know we are encouraged to use things like Myspace/Facebook, but will any work be done? 
• Will students be engaged with the subject matter, not just the ability to use a wiki?
• Will under sourced students be left behind? Students who do not have computers at home, will they be at a disadvantage in doing homework and research? Is there another way to combat this?
• Is a wiki actually useful in group work in a classroom environment? 
• Does a wiki make it easier to plagerise?
• Is there anyway to see if everyone is contributing on the main page equally?  

Think about the problem.

Act on the problem at hand

Review the way in which the problem was satisfactorily solved, and was there a better way?

Throughout the book there is a realistic treatment

• blessings and consequences of the copious

amount of information increasingly available

to staff and students;

• funding and policy dilemmas for institutions

and education systems;

• lamentable slowness of academia to

recognise the significant changes in library

resources and to take advantage of the

impact of information technology on

learning;

• potential for libraries to be integrated with

institutional IT infrastructure and resources;

• pros and cons of the “Google” approach; and

• need for institutional leadership and

foresight.

Contrary to system-controlled multimedia learning environments, hypermedia systems are characterized by a high level of interactivity. This interactivity is referred to as learner control in the respective literature. For several reasons this learner control is seen as a major advantage of hypermedia for learning and instruction. For instance, learner control might increase students’ interest and motivation, facilitate adaptive instruction, or provide affordances for active and constructive information processing. In this paper we analyze the instructional potentials of learner-controlled hypermedia environments as well as possible reasons for the ambiguous results of studies that have aimed at determining the effectiveness of hypermedia learning. According to our analysis, the potential effectiveness of self-controlled learning with hypermedia might be difficult to demonstrate due to (1) usability problems (i.e., disorientation, distraction, cognitive overload), (2) moderating learner characteristics (i.e., prior knowledge, self-regulatory skills, cognitive styles, and attitudes towards learning), (3) a lack of conceptual foundations, and (4) methodological shortcomings of many hypermedia studies. The findings reviewed in this paper and the corresponding claim that hypermedia may be effective only if used in a sensible way are used to derive a couple of guidelines for further research on hypermedia learning.

The article offers the opinions of several academics regarding a claim that collaborative online services and user generated sites like Slashdot, Digg, Myspace, Blogger, Youtube, and Wikipedia, are bad for society. Michael Gorman, former president of the American Library Association and the recently retired dean of library services at California State University at Fresno, made the claims against Web 2.0 sites in a series of postings on the Encyclopedia Britannica Online Web site. The article presents opinions from scholars that agree and disagree with Gorman, some of the scholars featured include Meredith Farkas, professor at Norwich University, John Miedema, professor at the University of Western Ontario, and Clay Shirky, professor at New York University.

This blog: HeyJude, is a great place to view an excellent blog, Judy O’Connell has created a blog that is about Making fortunate discoveries – Web 2.0, Library 2.0, and more… She keeps it updated, beautifully presented with relevant information. It sure helps us, Education Students at Notre Dame.
The blog is informative with information presented in a neat and tidy with plenty of graphics and small amounts of information, so it is easy to read and look over without getting bored…. In the blog, there are heaps of great links, such as: Bookyards, which is basically an online library… now we have no excuse to leave the house… hehe

HeyJude also has a del.icio.us account which has a whole bunch of different bookmarked pages that Judy finds interesting… also if you just do a word search with HeyJude, you see how many people have bookmarked her pages….
